Why Getting Involved Matters and How to Get Involved!

Updated: Jun 9, 2021

As you've read, Ingrid and her family supplied shelter and necessities for 40 Jews. They made a difference within their community that had lasting effects on people. Today, there are many issues in which you can get involved, both big and small. Ingrid's family was dedicated to fighting the oppression of Jews during the Holocaust. To honor their memory, we can all pitch in and help make our communities, cities, states, and our country a better place.

Ingrid's family dedicated their livelihood to protecting Jews from the oppression of the Holocaust. Today, many organizations help stop the growing oppression on people in America. Some organizations are ones you can volunteer with, and others are ones that supply resources and have the opportunity to donate. Below are links and descriptions to some of these websites, along with ways to make a difference by yourself. Links will be separated by issue.

Racism in America

This organization was founded in 2013 after the death of Trayvon Martin when his killer went free. It is a national movement meant to stop White Supremacy and violence on black people. Their website contains resources, information, and a donation option.

The NAACP covers all aspects of racism in America. They are dedicated to stopping police brutality, voter suppression, and fighting for equality. Their website is full of information on issues they fight for, important history, and current events. They supply many opportunities to get involved. Lastly, they have many resources to support you in your quest of improving your community.

These two organizations are great starting points for you to make a difference.

Climate Change

350 is a worldwide organization dedicated to combating climate change. They have joinable groups around the world that meet to discuss the next steps. Their website contains a simple and yet informative section on climate change. They say, 1. It's warming, 2. It's us, 3. We're sure, 4. It's bad, 5. We can fix it. Then, they go on to explain each of these more in depth. Along with this information, they have resources explaining what you can do by yourself to make a difference.

  • Save resources at home

I'm a student in the Issaquah School District. For my biology class, we had a 2 month long project titled What Can You Do? This project centered around helping your ecosystem and community. For one of my tasks, I chose water conservation. For 2 weeks, my family and I decreased our water usage by around 2 cubic feet a day. This is an easy way to combat the water shortages around the globe while saving money at the same time. Picking up trash in your community is also a great way to help the environment. Many things can be done by individuals like yourself in the quest to stop climate change.
